HEARING AID MAINTENANCE
Hearing aids are highly sophisticated little technological wonders that operate under anything but ideal conditions. Consistently being exposed to ear wax, body oil, and perspiration can be very detrimental to hearing aids. Because they have such a significant cost, it is wise to learn how to properly maintain your hearing aids.
Here are 6 steps to ensure the longevity of your hearing aids!

Keep your hearing aids away from heat and moisture.
- Excessive heat and moisture are very dangerous to the tiny circuitry inside any hearing aid. We recommend using a hearing aid dehumidifier in the event your hearing aids have gone through excessive moisture. The dehumidifier is a great way of keeping your hearing aids moisture-free and extending their lifespan.
STEP 2.
Do not use hairspray or any hair care products while wearing hearing aids.
Using hair care products can cause the hearing aid to malfunction. Using binding products like gel or hair spray can clog the microphone on the hearing aid and cause the unit to fail to function at peak performance.
STEP 3.
Turn off hearing aids when not in use.
- Not only will this help your hearing aid batteries last longer it will extend the life of the hearing aid's internal components. If they are constantly running 24/7 you are more likely to have a technical error occur.
STEP 4.
Do not drop the hearing aid
- Dropping hearing aids is extremely dangerous to the internal components. They are calibrated to fit your exact hearing loss needs and in the event the hearing aid is dropped onto concrete or a hard surface it can damage the internal electronics which would require a possible repair.
STEP 5.
Clean wax/body oils off the hearing aid.
- Wipe your hearing aids off with a clean, dry cloth. If the wax is still visible, use the tools in your cleaning kit to remove it safely. Filters and wax guards: Most hearing aids today come with built-in wax-protecting mechanisms such as filters and wax guards.
STEP 6.
Replace the dome on your hearing aid once a month.
- When you need a fresh, clean dome, remove the existing dome and put on a new one. We recommend replacing the dome at least once a month or as directed by your hearing care professional.
